In So Many Words

“In So Many Words” is the exploration of text in art and a depiction of being enveloped in thought.

It was a vision I had: A face with words swarming above.

For my first microgallery show back in 2023, I decided to try my hand at sculpting and created three small figurines that sat on the gallery floor with a backdrop of an 8”x10” abstract painting titled “December.”

For this exhibit, I envisioned a larger centerpiece similar to the hand-molded figures as a nod to Microgallery Act I. So for Act II, I chose a pre-fabricated face and decided to create an assemblage piece. It was nostalgic to get reacquainted with the practice of playing with scissors and glue. And it was fun to shape and crumple the thick paper.

It would be nice to take a deep dive into the art of words, and I don’t mean writing or poetry because that’s another art form in itself. Rather, to investigate the visual representation of languages from all over the world, its use in modern messaging, and the history of fonts, alphabets and typography. I feel I’ve merely dipped my toe in the subject and hope to expand on the concept in the future. For now, I’ve kept it simple, even restricting the work to black and white.

As for the swarming words, I didn’t over think the process. The background text was taken from household novels, and most words are the bullet points of daily existence: Eat, Drink, Sleep and do the Right thing. Be nice. Be pretty. Behave.

When sometimes all you want to do is Slurp and Devour the world without consequence.

Racing thoughts and responsibilities can sometimes consume. We wish for a quiet mind and a state of balance, and hope that among the swirling and swarming, great ideas are born.
